Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away and caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become cleaner or waitress in order for them to remain alive. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. But she quit school only after two years of school to explore a career in acting. It was not without difficulties. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a detective magazine she had a difficult time trying to get opportunities for stage. Following a short time as a club hat girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave her job. The New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a steady actor. Earned money performing during the daytime working as an Usherette. She also studied drama and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
